Executive Order 14412

Executive Order 14412 establishes a national policy to protect federal systems and critical infrastructure from advanced cryptographic attacks, including the future risk posed by large-scale quantum computers.

The order directs the federal government to transition information systems toward NIST-approved post-quantum cryptography standards and supports critical infrastructure owners and operators as they prepare for quantum-era security risks.

Adversaries can collect encrypted data today and decrypt it later when sufficiently powerful quantum computers become available. This is commonly known as Harvest Now, Decrypt Later.
